Shortly after the passing away of Sri Ramakrishna, the Prophet of Harmony of all religions. ln August 1886, a Monastic Order bearing his name the Ramakrishna Math was organised at the Math, Baranagore, two miles north of Calcutta by Swami Vivekananda. In 1899 the Math of monastery was transferred to its present home at Belur, across the Ganga, about four miles north of Calcutta. The Ramakrishna Mission was started by Swami Vivekananda in May 1897 and registered in 1909 under Act XXI of 1860.

The Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama at Allahabad is a constituted branch of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission with Headquarter at Belur Math (Howrah). It was founded in 1910 by His Holiness Swami Vijnananandaji Maharaj (1868-1938), a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. Since then this centre has been rendering services to the people of Allahabad without distinction of caste, class, creed etc. and the story of the Sevashrama has been a story of Its dedicated medical and educational services, the relief activities, apart from the spiriutal and cultural ones, rendered to the general public during the course of these 95 years of its existence.
